Why Tallow Soap

Conventional bar soaps and most liquid body washes are built on sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) or similar synthetic detergents — they clean effectively but strip the skin's natural oils in the process, leaving the tight, dry feeling that follows a shower. Tallow soap cleans differently: its fatty acid profile (close to human sebum) washes away dirt and oil without stripping the skin's lipid barrier. The result is skin that feels clean rather than squeaky — soft, conditioned, and not immediately reaching for moisturiser.

Tallow has been the primary soap-making fat for most of human history. The industrial shift to synthetic detergents is recent. The reformulation back to tallow is not a trend — it's a return to what worked.

The Seven Ingredients

Ingredients: Grass Fed Tallow, Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Castor Oil, Nutmeg Essential Oil, Lemongrass Essential Oil, Activated Charcoal.

Each ingredient has a job. The tallow is the conditioning base. The olive oil adds additional skin-softening oleic acid. The coconut oil produces the hard bar and contributes to lather. The castor oil is the lather booster — a small amount dramatically increases bubble production and lather density. The activated charcoal draws impurities from the skin's surface — particularly effective for pores, oily skin, and hands that cook with meat, handle cast iron, or work with fats. The essential oils provide the scent and their own skin properties.

The Scent

Lemongrass and nutmeg is an unexpected combination that works: lemongrass is bright, citrusy, and slightly herbal — a clean, energising opening note. Nutmeg is warm, slightly spiced, and grounding — it softens and rounds the lemongrass without sweetening it. Together they produce a scent that's complex enough to be interesting, natural enough not to be overpowering, and gender-neutral enough for a shared shower shelf.
